In honor of Shirley Rabb Winston, an annual scholarship has been established and made available through The National Society of Arts and Letters to young vocal artists between the ages of 16 and 22. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent and promise of future success.

The scholarship funds are only for private study, for special training or for personal advancement in the applicant's future career. The funds are not for college tuition, housing or travel.

The maximum amount awarded to an applicant is $5000.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

1. The applicant must provide a DVD of his/her vocal proficiency. The DVD must be of studio quality.

2. All selections are to be performed from memory.

3. Applicant must present vocal selections that are contrasting in style, preferably from art songs, operas, or oratorios. One must be in English. Duration 10 minutes.

ELIGIBILITY

1. The applicant:

a) must be a citizen of the U.S.

b) must be between 16 and 22 years of age, by February 1, 2008. Proof of age (birth certificate, driver’s license or passport) must be submitted with the application.

c) must submit a vocal performance on DVD to a Chapter of The National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL). See contact information below.

d) must demonstrate a serious commitment to their art by providing a written statement of their career plans for the future.

e) must specify the mode of further study: private study, special training, or for personal advancement in the applicant's future career. The funds are not for college tuition, housing or travel.

2. The DVD performances selected by the Chapter judges will be sent to the Winston Scholarship Committee Chair.

3. The awarded scholarship funds will be sent directly to the institution, teacher, or tutor chosen by the scholarship winner/s with the approval of the Winston Scholarship Committee.

ADJUDICATION

1. Qualified judges from each NSAL Chapter will select the DVDs of the best vocalists and send them to the Winston Scholarship Committee at the expense of the Chapter.

2. The adjudication of the applicants by the Winston Scholarship Committee will be made in two groups: vocalists of 16 to 18 years of age and vocalists of 19 to 22 years of age.

3. Applicants will be judged on their present state of ability in each of the following five areas:

• musicality,

• vocal quality,

• interpretation,

• diction and

• presentation.

4. The final awards will be made by the Winston Scholarship Committee and its decisions will be final.

PROTECTION

Care and caution will be exercised in the handling of all DVDs. NSAL, NSAL Chapters and the Scholarship Committee shall not be liable for claims for loss, theft or damage of any kind. If insurance is desired, it must be arranged by the applicant. Following the awards, the DVDs will be returned to the applicants.

CHAPTER RESPONSIBILITY

Qualified judges from each Chapter shall select the best performances based on the DVDs received.  The DVDs will be sent to the Winston Scholarship Committee Chair at the expense of the Chapter.

APPLICANT RESPONSIBILITY

The DVDs must be of studio quality, that is, it must be without echo and must not be a recording of a recital or a performance.

In honor of Naomi Winston, an annual scholarship has been established and made available, through the National Society of Arts and Letters, to young visual artists between the ages of 16 and 22. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent and promise of future success.

The scholarship funds are only for private study, for special training or for personal advancement in the applicant's art medium. They can be used for workshops, museum programs, summer programs, etc. The funds are not for college tuition, housing or travel.

The maximum amount awarded to an applicant is $5000.

ARTISTIC REQUIREMENTS

1. The art works must be original.

2. The style of work may be realistic, abstract or expressive.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. The applicant must submit in JPEG format of high quality on a CD or DVD images of five (5) art works done within the past two years. Prints (4” x 6”) of the art work must accompany the CD or DVD. The prints, and the CD or DVD must accurately reflect the artist’s work. The entire uncropped view of the work must be visible. Each CD or DVD must be labeled with the artist’s name, title and medium of the art works. On the reverse of each print add the dimensions of the work as well as the date it was made.

2. Works must be two-dimensional and may be on paper, canvas, masonite, metal or wood panels, in pencil, pen, charcoal, colored pencil, watercolor, oil or acrylic paints, mixed media or original prints. Photographs or computer graphics are excluded. Three-dimensional work will not be accepted.

3. No material will be returned.

ELIGIBILITY

1. The applicant:

a) must be a citizen of the United States.

b) must be between 16 and 22 years of age by February 1, 2009. Proof of age must be submitted (a copy of current driver’s license, birth certificate or passport) with the application.

c) must submit a CD or DVD and printout of their works to a chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL).

d) must demonstrate a serious commitment to their art by stating in writing their career plans for the future.

e) must specify the mode of further study: private study, special training, or for personal advancement in their art.

2. The CD or DVD and prints selected by the Chapter judges will be sent to the Winston Scholarship Committee Chair. The Scholarship Committee will select the finalists. Finalists may be notified to send the original art works to the Winston Scholarship Chair for final judging by the Committee.

3. The awarded scholarship funds will be sent directly to the institution, teacher or tutor chosen by the scholarship winner with the approval of the Winston Scholarship Committee.

4. Former applicants may apply again for a scholarship. Applicants may also compete in the NSAL Career Awards Competition.

ADJUDICATION

1. Qualified judges from each NSAL Chapter will select the CD or DVD of the best artists and send them to the Winston Scholarship Committee Chair at the expense of the Chapter.

2. Art works will be judged on:

a) the elements and principles of design.

b) the skillful use of the medium or media.

c) originality and self-expression showing potential for growth as an artist.

3. The awards will be made by the Winston Scholarship Committee, and its decisions will be final.

From the CDs or DVDs submitted by the Chapters, the Winston Scholarship Committee will select the finalists. If you are selected as a finalist, you may be notified to send your original artwork to the Winston Scholarship Committee Chair for the final selection. Art works will be returned.
