COMPETITIONS:

These competitions for monetary
awards to assist artists are the "heart" of NSAL. They afford the
opportunity for young people throughout the United States to be heard
and seen by professional critics, managers, producers, teachers, the
media, and patrons of the arts.
All competitions are adjudicated
by locally and nationally known men and women in the arts.
There are two categories of competitions:
NSAL
National Career Awards:
The National Career Award
is given annually in a nationally announced competition in a
specifically chosen discipline. The Washington Chapter conducts a
competition in the chosen discipline, with chapter award monies. Chapter's winner goes on to
compete against other local chapter winners
at the Annual National Convention, usually held in May, at some inspiring
location around the country.
National winners can get
large awards, and the opportunity to be heard and seen by professional
critics,
managers, producers, teachers, the media, and patrons of the arts.
All competitions are
adjudicated by nationally known men and women in the arts. A
Master Class is conducted by renowned judges for the National Career
Awards Competitions. Opportunities for one-on-one sessions and
individual critiques are also encouraged.
For information from the NSAL National Organization's
web site, go to:
www.arts-nsal.org/competition.html
NSAL
Winston Scholarship Program
In addition, the
National Convention makes awards in art and voice under the
Winston
Scholarship program. Again, the Washington Chapter
conducts some specific competitions, with the chapter winners competing
at the national level for larger scholarships. See: BELOW
or
http://www.arts-nsal.org/scholarships.html
Chapter Awards:
In addition to the required National Career Award,
the Washington Chapter generally conducts competitions for the Winston
Scholarship national award program in art and voice. Winners get a
chapter award with the right to compete at the national level for
additional prize money.
The Washington Chapter often gives additional awards
in one or more of the following categories. Generally, a specific
specialty is the focus, as shown by examples in parentheses.
-
Art (watercolor,
sculpture, oil painting, fabric art, jewelry design, architecture)
-
Drama (acting,
playwriting, comedic acting, TV scriptwriting)
-
Dance (ballet, modern
dance)
-
Literature (poetry, short
story)
-
Music (vocal performance,
piano, other instruments, conducting)
These Washington Chapter Awards are funded through
one of the many funds designated by named donors. For a list, see
Award Funds.
