WELCOME
The National Society of Arts and Letters, founded in 1944, is a
non-profit educational organization of volunteer men and women who are
engaged professionally in the creative or performing arts or who are
actively sponsoring the work of young artists. The society’s
enthusiastic members give their time, energy, and talent to promote and
assist young artists in the United States.
The aims of the NSAL are to encourage young people in the arts - art,
dance, drama, literature, music, or musical theater. Awards are
given through annual competitions.
Award funds are derived from benefits and from contributions of
donors. In addition to awards at the chapter level, the national
NSAL has established the National Career Award, in varying specific
disciplines each year. Cash grants are presented annually to the
winner of the national competition. Each national contestant must
be sponsored by, and a winner of, a local chapter of the NSAL.
Across the nation, chapters work each year to find talented young
people to compete for a $10,000 first award in specific areas within the
disciplines of art, dance, drama, literature, music, or music theatre. NSAL celebrated its 60th anniversary at the 2004 convention. Over that span of time the society has presented more than 4,000 awards and over a million dollars to talented young artists.
Through the NSAL, talented emerging young artists are provided with
financial help and encouraged and assisted in their chosen careers by
means of exhibits, concerts, and performances.
Since 1944 the aims
and objectives of NSAL have been to:
• Discover talented
young artists at the beginning of their careers.
• Award excellence by
granting awards for competitions in art, dance, drama, literature,
music, and musical theater.
• Create opportunities
for career development and expression in literature and the visual and
performing arts.
• Promote a greater
public interest in the creative arts.
